I’m glad you called

She touched her cheek and remembered
the yellow grass of home
how it always forebode
unquenchable thirst
dark patches of drought
corners of the soul
that should’ve stayed hidden

She sipped her tea and remembered
walking on egg shells
without breaking a single one of them

She didn’t notice that the cup burned her fingers
the pain of her memories
blocked the present tense
it veiled the green grass surrounding her
until the phone rang

Your electricity bill can be 20% cheaper
a voice rattled
and automatically she answered
no thank you
then she smiled

I’m glad you called
