Emergency exit

He was running through the hallways of the hospital
… skidding corners
sliding linoleum floors

I could tell his breath was 20 steps behind him
trying to catch up

His heart went even faster than he did
urging him to stop

But he ran
with no interest
in listening

The hospital seemed bigger than before
he must have ran
for hours

When his breath slowed down
then his heart slowed down
and his hope broke down

Though death had been walking at a leisurely pace
he was there immediately
with a friendly smile

“Were you looking for me?”

This is the first poem that I dared to ask tips about. I thank Sandra Gordon from  the Poem me group on Facebook for her suggestions. They were exactly what the poem needed.
